  • Description:

The Hatch Mountain Fire was reported on July 7 at approximately 1300 hours, located approximately six miles west of Hatch, Utah. The fire was responded to by multiple resources including a Type 6 engine and five-person squad. The team had an Intermediate Faller (FAL2)—using a Stihl 461 that had been in service for approximately one year—with an Advanced Faller (FAL1) providing mentorship. They had been having a difficult time keeping the saw running correctly all day. While troubleshooting the saw, the FAL1 carefully opened the gas fill cap. The saw fuel geysered and covered the firefighter's pants and shirt.
