Description:
Cecil Smith, a civilian employee at the Sierra Army Depot, was killed by a falling tree top while assisting with suppression of the Hog Valley Fire, northeast of Downieville, California. Smith was one of five firefighters hit by the broken top. The men were treated onscene and a doctor was flown to the fire by helicopter to provide further medical treatment. Additional information about this incident or the health outcomes to the other men is not readily available. The fire burned approximately 130 acres in a rugged part of the Tahoe National Forest.
