Hog Valley Fire Hit by Tree Fatality 1960

Cecil Smith, a civilian employee at Sierra Army Depot, was killed by a falling tree top while assisting with suppression of the Hog Valley Fire, northeast of Downieville, California. Smith was one of five firefighters hit by the broken top. The men were treated onscene, and a doctor was flown to the fire by helicopter to provide further medical treatment. Further information about the incident or health outcomes to the other men is not readily available. The fire burned about 130 acres in a rugged part of the Tahoe National Forest.
