Description:
At approximately 3:10 a.m. on October 30, 1991, the District Forester for the Kentucky River District, Kentucky Division of Forestry, received a phone call from the Unit Ranger informing that there had been an accident on the Hogg Hollow Fire. One firefighter was dead and three were injured. All were members of the Neon Volunteer Fire Department. The Unit Ranger advised that both the seasonal crew leader and the Letcher County guard with firefighting crews from the Kentucky Division of Forestry were at the scene.
Firefighter John Emerson Spangler died at the scene. Of the three other entrapped firefighters, one received severe burns over 45 to 60 percent of their body and was transported to the UK Medical Center; one received second degree burns and abrasions and was admitted to the Whitesburg ARH Hospital, one received second degree burns and back pain and was admitted to the Whitesburg ARH Hospital.
