Description:
Ernie Cachini, a 19-year-old firefighter from the Zuni, New Mexico fire program, was struck by lightning while on a steep slope of the Tonto National Forest. Cachini and his crew were on the fireline on the Mogollon Rim when lightning struck the firefighter at about 1545, July 10. He was medevacked by helicopter to the hospital in Payson, where he was pronounced dead.
