Description:
Orville Fredrick Williams, an 18-year-old Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) crewmember based at Camp Paul Bunyan in Wyoming, Minnesota, was killed in a vehicle collision in dense smoke. The truck carrying CCC crewmembers struck a U.S. Forest Service vehicle in smoke somewhere near a fire in Hubbard County, Minnesota. Williams was killed and five other CCC firefighters were thrown from the vehicle, with one becoming seriously injured. At the time,1,000 firefighters were working to suppress fires in this area.
