    Phillip Willis, an employee of the Idanha Lumber Company, was killed when the jeep he was riding in to the scene of the Hubbard Creek Fire, Willamette National Forest, went off the road. A total of six individuals were enroute to the fire near Detroit, Oregon, on the morning of August 23 when the jeep went off a steep embankment at French Creek. The jeep's brakes reportedly failed, and several of the other occupants jumped clear as it went off the road. The driver was admitted to the hospital with head and back injuries.
