    While clearing road access on the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest, Georgia, during Hurricane Helene response, a firefighter was cutting out a hazard tree and a limb struck him in the head hard enough to break his hard hat. A USFS EMT was in the immediate area and provided initial medical support. The injured firefighter was transported via USFS vehicle to Chattanooga, TN. After diagnosis of fractured skull (no surgery needed) and a concussion, the firefighter was released on the evening of 9/30/24. As the firefighter was driving home, they felt ill and returned to the hospital and spent the night for observation.
