Indian Mountain Fire Hit by Tree Fatality 1946

    Lester Lycklama, a McCall smokejumper, was killed by injuries received from a falling tree on an initial attack fire on the Payette National Forest in Idaho. Lycklama and a fellow jumper were using a crosscut saw to fell a lightning-struck ponderosa pine snag. The snag's top 1/3 broke while they were under the tree, and both jumpers attempted to escape. Lycklama tripped on a tree root and the broken top fell on him, injuring his head. A 16-hour packout of the injured Lycklama ensued, until he was admitted into the hospital in Council. He passed away in the hospital on July 6.
