Description:
A three-person initial attack crew was suppressing the Johnny Canyon Fire in Colorado when they were informed by other fire personnel of active thunderstorms in their area. The crew decided to hike out of the fire and were impacted by a severe thunderstorm. While crossing a fence, a lightning strike nearby was felt in their limbs by two firefighters. On the drive out in a UTV through rain and hail, the firefighters experienced the early stages of hypothermia. After warming up in their truck, they drove to their station without further incident.
