Lime Complex Tree Incident 2008

  • Location:

    California
  • Date:

    07/26/2008
  • Incident Type:

    Hit by Tree
  • Description:

During initial attack on the Lime Complex, a Class B Faller identified a green, rotted snag swaying during air operations that needed to be fallen. The snag was to fall from west to east with a 78% downslope below the snag's landing zone. The faller removed one handcrew and one engine company from the snag's area. He then had his National Guard Bravo Task Force proceed down the hill approximately 150 feet. Before making his final cut, the faller again made verbal contact with the Task Force. When the snag fell it split into five sections. Several National Guard personnel who had moved farther up the line to observe the snag falling had to jump out away from one of the rolling sections to prevent being struck. Two Guardsmen jumped to safety, one receiving cuts on his leg and the other Guardsman receiving cuts to forearm and leg. The National Guard medics treated both personnel on scene and they returned to the fireline.
