Little Venus Fire Entrapment 2006

  • Location:

    Wyoming
  • Date:

    07/18/2006
  • Incident Type:

    Entrapment
  • Description:

On July 18, 2006, 10 members of a fire use module (wildland fire module) became entrapped and deployed fire shelters while hiking into their camp location on the Little Venus Fire, Shoshone National Forest, Wyoming. While the module followed a trail into a backcountry area, the module noted a major change in fire behavior, pushing the fire towards their location in an intense run. Radio communication in the remote area was very difficult. The module reversed course and hiked back towards their vehicles at the trailhead when the fire forced them to deploy fire shelters next to a streamcourse. One crewmember separated from the rest and deployed her shelter in a different location. All module crewmembers survived the entrapment without injury.
