Livermore Fire Entrapment 1994

  • Location:

    Montana
  • Date:

    08/05/1994
  • Incident Type:

    Entrapment
  • Description:

The Livermore Fire on the Blackfeet Indian Reservation, Montana, had exhibited erratic, explosive fire behavior for several days, causing crews to disengage and retreat to safety zones on multiple occasions. On August 5, 1994, the fire entrapped a group of 20 hand crew members and two engine crew members. The group could not communicate with the aircraft circling above them, and did not have a full picture of their situation. They removed the fire shelters from their cases and partially deployed them, but ultimately determined a full deployment was not necessary as the fire behavior subsided.
