William Seaman, an Irish-American logger working in Vader, Washington, was killed after he went with about 800 volunteers to suppress a forest fire in the Long-Bell area north of Mt. St Helens. Seaman's death was reportedly caused by a fall from a cliff into burning brush in the dark. He was transported to the hospital in Longview, where he succumbed to his injuries. The fire ultimately burned about 1000 acres of recent cut-over land.
