Description:
Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) Camp Foreman Arthur Bowman of Cascade Locks Camp (F-7) was killed by a falling snag on a small fire located near the camp. Bowman and Wesley Thurner, a U.S. Forest Service employee working on the Mount Hood National Forest, traveled to the small fire near Lowden Road, west of Larch Mountain. At the fire, they intended to fell this lightning-struck, burning snag. In the process of falling the snag, a piece of the tree fell, striking Bowman on the head and killing him instantly. Thurner was uninjured.
