Description:
Alga Raymond Jones, a 16-year-old member of the Los Angeles County juvenile probation forestry program was critically injured by a falling rock while cold-trailing the Magic Mountain Fire on the Angeles National Forest, California. Jones, assigned to the Mendenhall Forestry Camp near Lake Hughes, was struck on the head by a rock on July 23 and was taken to the hospital in an unconscious state. He remained in what was described as a "semi-coma" for months until he passed away on December 10, 1960, at the age of 17.
The death of Jones re-opened a controversy over the use of juveniles in county custody in fire-related work. In 1955, an adult fire captain and five minors were entrapped and fatally burned on the Hacienda Fire.
