Description:
On August 5, 1932, 16-year-old Difford Whisnant and his father who lived in Berlin, Oregon, hiked into a fire in the McDowell Creek area, located a few miles east of Berlin. While approaching the fireline to offer assistance to the firefighters, a feller cut down a tree that resulted in the Difford's death. Some sources indicate that the tree being felled may have struck another tree, which was the tree that ultimately struck the boy. He was reportedly killed instantly from a traumatic head wound.
