On August 5, 1932, 16-year-old Difford Whisnant and his father of Berlin, Oregon, hiked into a fire in McDowell Creek, a few miles east of Berlin. While approaching the fireline to offer assistance to the firefighters, a feller cut down a tree that resulted in the death of the teenager. Some sources indicate that the tree being felled may have struck another tree, which was the tree that ultimately struck Whisnant. He was allegedly killed instantly from a traumatic head wound.
