Description:
During suppression actions on a wildland fire in Kentucky, firefighter John McManus lost his footing on the top of a cliff and fell down a 30-foot embankment, landing on his back. He was able to radio for help. McManus, who broke his back and arm in the fall, went through exploratory surgery on his back at Central Baptist Hospital in Lexington, Kentucky.
