    Richard Bowers and Barbara Booth, two new hires with the Oregon Department of Forestry, were killed when their engine crashed responding to a wildland fire on private timber company land east of Cottage Grove, Oregon. The two firefighters began work for ODF on July 5, and were on a scheduled day off when they were called in to respond to the fire. The accident occurred at 0935 when the engine plunged from a bridge over Mosby Creek at Allen Creek.
