    Lloyd Shellabarger died suddenly of an apparent heart attack while leading a conservation camp crew on the Mud Springs Fire, near Laytonville, Mendocino County. Shellabarger, an employee of the California Department of Forestry (now CAL FIRE), was leading a hand crew in hot conditions on a steep slope when he collapsed. A vacationing doctor at a nearby summer cabin pronounced Shellabarger dead. The fire was contained at 6000 acres.
