    William Gaffney, a 41-year-old smokechaser for the US Forest Service was taken ill while fighting a fire alone in a very remote part of central Idaho. Gaffney was forced to hike to town over several days, and eventually was admitted to the hospital in Lewiston for surgery. It was determined he had a hernia and his condition was serious. Though his surgery was successful, he passed away in the hospital on August 7.
