Nez Perce-Clearwater Medical Emergency Fatality 1914

William Gaffney, a 41-year-old smokechaser for the U.S. Forest Service became ill while suppressing a fire alone in a very remote part of central Idaho. Gaffney was forced to take a several day-hike to town. He was eventually admitted to the hospital in Lewiston for surgery. It was determined that Gaffney had a hernia and that his condition was serious. Though his surgery was successful, he passed away in the hospital three days later, on August 7, 1914.
