Throughout the summer of 1910, thousands of fires were ignited across Eastern Washington, Northern Idaho, and Western Montana, largely in a series of dry thunderstorms. On August 20, 1910, a cold front passage over the area caused the "Big Blowup," joining hundreds of existing fires into rapidly expanding flame fronts that advanced to the east. In total, 3 million acres burned in the span of only a few days, burning several towns, including a substantial portion of Wallace, Idaho. Officially, 85 people were killed the in fires, with the Forest Service counting 78 of these as firefighters.
