Description:
Firefighters from the Hunts Run Civilian Conservation Corps Camp near Emporium, Pennsylvania, responded on the afternoon of October 19, 1938 to a reported fire on Pepper Hill Mountain. After initial work of line construction and firing, a crew was ordered to the top of the fire to begin line construction there. While making their way there, a previously undetected fire run caught nine members of the crew, killed eight and injuring one.
Those Civil Conservation Corps firefighters on the Pepper Hill Fire were: Basil Bogush, John Boring, Ross Hollobaugh, Stephen Jacofsky, Gilbert Mahoney, Howard May, Andrew Stefphanic, and George Vogel.
