Picture City Fire Entrapment Fatality 1930

  • Location:

    California
  • Date:

    11/04/1930
  • Incident Type:

    Entrapment
  • Description:

In early November of 1930, a fire burned approximately 400 acres near either Calabasas or Agoura Hills, California. Raymond Wheeler Taylor responded to the fire and was entrapped and perished. It is unclear whether Taylor was an official firefighter with the Los Angeles County Fire Department, another agency, or simply a civilian who responded to this incident. A monument to Taylor was erected in the area, describing him as a "brush fire victim." The monument was later bulldozed for construction. Taylor's death certificate indicated that he received burns over 80 percent of his body. Very little information about this fire and the circumstances of Taylor's death is readily available. The fire perimeter is not documented in California's fire history database.
