Description:
On June 30, 2002, The Price Canyon was ignited by a railroad train on BLM lands north of Price, Utah. The initial attack response included a mix of resources including 8 smokejumpers. Shortly after arriving on the fire, a group of five smokejumpers carried out a firing operation to create a safety zone for themselves and their gear and to secure that flank of the fire. Fire behavior of the main fire increased until the fire experienced a column collapse, sending fire running towards the jumpers. They became entrapped, with three outrunning the fire on foot and two deploying fire shelters for over 30 minutes. The smokejumpers were uninjured.
