While performing Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) aerial ignition operations on the Quarry Fire, Stanislaus National Forest, California, firefighters encountered plastic aerial ignition spheres commercially known as “Dragon Eggs” that were incredibly volatile. After bench testing with different batches of plastic spheres and different mixes of chemicals, they concluded that a batch of Dragon Eggs manufactured in 2023 were overly volatile.
