Ramona Air Tanker Accident Fatality 1970

  • Location:

    California
  • Date:

    09/04/1970
  • Incident Type:

    Fixed Wing Incident
  • Description:

At 0955 on September 4, 1970, a Grumman TBM-3E air tanker registered N9860C and operating as Tanker E95 crashed during suppression operations on a fire near Ramona, California. The aircraft was observed by witnesses to make a wide left turn and suddenly sharpen its turn and descend rapidly. A stall induced by low flying speed combined with a high density altitude situation was determined to be the cause of the accident. The sole pilot was killed. Very little further information is readily available, including the pilot's name.
