Description:
On February 9, 2022, on the Red Rio Prescribed Fire unit on the Las Cruces District, Bureau of Land Management, New Mexico, a group of three patrolled the unit on a UTV. The firefighters were not aware that vegetation had become wedged between the UTV’s bed and cab. As they continued driving and patrolling the fire’s edge, this wedged vegetation caught fire and melted a corner of the UTV’s bed. The operator smelled the melting plastic and quickly stopped the UTV. The fire was quickly extinguished with no injuries, and the UTV was still functional.
