  • Description:

It is approximately 1230 hours on the Yellow Jacket Prescribed Fire on the Columbine Ranger District of the San Juan National Forest. Three firefighters are refilling drip torches on the control line. While in the middle of refilling, another five-gallon container (jerry can) of drip torch fuel is needed—and is therefore brought up the line. When the new jerry can is opened it issues a fan spray of torch mix and fuel vapor. Two of the three firefighters are sprayed with the fuel. When the torch mix hits the ground, it contacts some hot parts of the line and ignites.
