Riverside County Firefighter Fatality 1928

In late September, 1928, a large fire burned on national forest land in Riverside County, California, which is described as the Cleveland National Forest but may have been the San Bernardino NF. The fire likely burned an area between Oak Mountain, Bautista Road, and Cahuilla, encompassing 60,000 acres. During suppression efforts on the fire, the burned body of volunteer firefighter Ben McCall was found in the fire area. The cause of death is not readily available, and there is some disagreement about the firefighter's name. His body was taken to Hemet for a coroner's inquest on a pack horse. No other information was readily available.
