Riverside County Firefighter Fatality 1928

  • Location:

    California
  • Date:

    09/23/1928
  • Incident Type:

    Unknown
  • Description:

In late September, 1928, a large fire burned on national forest land in Riverside County, California, which is described as the Cleveland National Forest but may have been the San Bernardino National Forest. The fire likely burned an area between Oak Mountain, Bautista Road, and Cahuilla--encompassing 60,000 acres. During suppression efforts on this fire, the burned body of volunteer firefighter Ben McCall was found inside the fire area. His cause of death is not readily available and there is some disagreement about the firefighter's name. His body was taken by pack horse to Hemet for a coroner's inquest. No other information is available on this fatality.
