At approximately 1330 hours on August 4th, a Forest Service vehicle carrying three firefighters went off the road while driving to the Powers Ranger District with a destination of the Gold Beach Ranger District, both on the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest, Oregon. Tragically, one of the occupants suffered fatal injuries during the incident. The other two firefighters were taken to the hospital; one received treatment for minor injuries, the other was evaluated out of an abundance of caution and both were released later that evening. Another firefighter, who arrived at the scene in a separate vehicle, was also taken to the hospital as a precautionary measure but was subsequently discharged.
