  • Description:

Forestry Foreman Clarence Schultz from Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) Camp Cove Creek was killed by lightning while returning from an initial attack fire with two other CCC firefighters. The men had suppressed the fire and were hiking back to their camp on the banks of the Middle Fork Salmon River. All three firefighters were struck by lightning, although two of the men quickly recovered. These two men, identified as Lawrence and Morris, split duties: Lawrence stayed with Schultz while Morris traveled cross-country for five miles to get help. Schultz, who succumbed to his injuries, was noted as being an employee of the Salmon National Forest since 1925.
