    California Department of Forestry (CDF, now CAL FIRE) firefighter James Heniser was entrapped and fatally burned while working to suppress a fire on Santiago Peak in Orange County, California on August 25, 1952. Heniser and three others were suddenly surrounded by flames in excess of 6 feet, and Heniser was overcome by smoke or hot gases. He collapsed in an area that was inaccessible due to extreme heat. The three other firefighters reportedly escaped and were hospitalized for heat illness.
