Sawyer Feet Burns 2015

  • Incident Information:

  • Location:

    Idaho
  • Date:

    08/30/2015
  • Incident Type:

    Burn Injury
  • Description:

During his initial size-up of a recently burned hazard tree, a sawyer noticed that he could still feel the heat coming from the ground adjacent to the tree he was planning to cut. Utilizing the help of another crew member, they mixed cool dirt with the hot coals for approximately 15 minutes until the work area was sufficiently cool. A hose lay was available nearby, but the firefighters elected not to cool the area further.

For the next couple minutes, the sawyer stood in this same area—that they had just cooled down and prepared—while he successfully dropped the tree. Walking away from the stump, the sawyer began to experience intense pain and heat in both feet. He sat down and took both boots off. Initially this felt better, but the pain returned and blisters began developing on both sides of both feet.
