    While conducting a controlled burn in Hunterdon County with the New Jersey Forest Fire Service, Firefighter Scheuerer was struck by a vehicle driven by a civilian. The accident apparently happened after the wind shifted causing heavy smoke from the controlled burn to reduce visibility on the road where Scheuerer was present. Firefighter Scheuerer did not survive the injuries he sustained when struck by the vehicle.
