Schuylkill County Fire Entrapment Fatality 1923

  • Location:

    Pennsylvania
  • Date:

    04/21/1923
  • Incident Type:

    Entrapment
  • Description:

Anthony Karish, Jr., 16, volunteered to fight one of numerous forest fires in the area of Sheppton, Pennsylvania in April 1923. On April 21, 1923, he is reported to have been killed by burns while engaging in fire suppression. No further details of this entrapment are readily available. The Governor of Pennsylvania, ex-Forest Service Chief Gifford Pinchot, wrote: "I was greatly shocked to learn of the death of your son by the forest fire near Humboldt fire tower... As heartrending as the incident is there is a measure of consolation in the fact that Anthony met his death heroically in a fight for the public interest."
