    On September 4, 1955, a fire run trapped several firefighting resources on the Seneca Fire, Malheur National Forest, near John Day, Oregon. In heavy smoke, one man, Elwood Jackson, became separated from his seven-person crew and lost his life in the entrapment. Another firefighter was severely burned. Two bulldozers whose operators escaped on foot were damaged by fire. The other firefighters in the area escaped to a bare knoll and waited as the fire subsided around them.
