    Four California Department of Forestry (now CAL FIRE) firefighters were entrapped and suffered burn injuries in their fire engine on the Shanti Ashrama Fire east of Mount Hamilton near San Jose on August 18, 1952. A total of 325 firefighters, including two California Youth Authority handcrews, 15 engines, eight dozers, and tankers contained the fire at 7,000 acres that night. Two of the burned firefighters were admitted in critical condition to the hospital in Livermore, while the other two were treated and released. The fire was named for a nearby spiritual retreat founded in 1900.
