Description:
Vernon "Mickey" West, a longtime timberman in Western Montana, was felling a tree with a companion on the Skalkaho Fire in Montana's Bitterroot National Forest when a large rock struck both men. The rock was released from above when a log burned out and rolled toward the men at a high speed. The other crewmember was able to escape with an injury to his foot. West was hit and died on scene.
