Slaughter Fire Entrapment Fatality 1967

  • Location:

    Arizona
  • Date:

    05/19/1967
  • Incident Type:

    Entrapment
  • Description:

Rolfe Hoyer, employee of the Apache National Forest in southeastern Arizona, was entrapped and killed on the Slaughter Fire. Details of the Hoyer's death may be somewhat unreliable. He was reported to have been the recreation and lands officer on the Apache NF, and was acting as Fire Boss (IC) when the fire grew in intensity when it reached pre-commercial thinning slash. Hoyer then tried to outrun the fire, and reportedly could not hear warnings shouted to him by firefighters on a nearby road.

Rolfe C. Hoyer Campground near Greer, AZ was dedicated in his honor.
