Description:
A wildfire started at noon on January 17, 1950 at Camp Carson in Colorado. Within 90 minutes, 20 buildings at the north end of the base were ablaze. This most destructive wildfire in El Paso County’s history claimed nine lives, injured 50 and destroyed 89 buildings at the post--worth more than $5 million. Fanned by 50-70 mph winds, the fire burned a 50-square-mile area from the Army post up Cheyenne Mountain to The Broadmoor Hotel, which was successfully saved by hundreds of firefighters.
