About lunch time, a firefighter sees a smoke and starts walking to it to determine what will be needed to put it out. Without warning, the “solid ground” on which the firefighter is walking suddenly gives way. The firefighter falls into an unseen ash pit. He immediately jumps out—knowing that he’s burned his leg near the top of his boot. He radios his supervisor who immediately calls a nearby EMT to the firefighter’s location for first aid treatment. The EMT provides onsite first aid and determines that the firefighter should go to fire camp for further evaluation and to receive a higher level of treatment.
