Description:
On July 24, 2002, at approximately 1545 hours, on the Toolbox Fire Complex, the Pacific Northwest contract 20-person “Ferguson 53 Crew," deployed their fire shelters while in an area that had been constructed as a safety zone by a bulldozer. The deployment lasted approximately 15 minutes. Later that evening, crewmembers were treated by medical personnel in fire camp for burns and smoke inhalation. Eleven crewmembers were then transported to St. Charles Hospital in Bend, Oregon. Two crewmembers had received minor burns and nine crewmembers were impacted by smoke inhalation. They were all treated and released.
