On August 6, 1934, two trucks of Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) firefighters overturned in separate accidents on the highway in western Montana, injuring 20. The vehicles were transporting crews back the Ninemile Remount Depot near Missoula from the Trout Creek Fire when both vehicles rolled over. Sixteen firefighters were injured in one vehicle which rolled over near Thomspon Falls. The vehcile was traveling about 25-30 miles per hour when it missed a sharp turn in the road and rolled over. Four more were injured in an accident close to their destination when a tire blowout caused the truck to veer off the road. The vehicle had been traveling about 25 miles an hour at the time of the accident. In both cases the vehicles were open-backed trucks with bench seats along the sides.
