Water Tender Incident -
Description:
A lightning ignited fire was started on July 7th. Three days later, a 15-speed, 4800 gallon, county water tender was ordered to replace a broken down BLM water tender. The county tender arrived at the Incident Command Post (ICP) on Wednesday to help support the fire suppression efforts. While descending a hill, the driver of this water tender changed gears several times as the slope steepness changed. When attempting to shift into 4th gear, the operator could not get into 4th on the double-clutch transmission. Attempting to apply the brakes, he realized brake air pressure was zero. A vehicle coming the other way caused the operator to avoid a head on collision, and in the swerving, sloshing water drove the vehicle into a Forest Service pickup truck in front of him. Both vehicles crashed. All vehicle occupants were taken to the hospital but were released the same day.
