William Maxwell, an 18-year-old Chicagoan employed by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) at the camp near Winlock, Washington, was struck and killed by a large snag while working to suppress a fire in nearby Vader. The fire threatened the small community of Vader, and the entire firefighting force of the local CCC camp was mobilized to fight it.
