    John Gulock, a 59-year-old logger from Portland, died suddenly at the fire camp of the Willard Fire, Columbia National Forest near White Salmon, Washington, while waiting in the pay line. Gulock's cause of death was listed as apoplexy. In 1949 the Columbia National Forest was re-designated the Gifford Pinchot National Forest.
