    Frank Palmer, a Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) enrollee in Company 1654 was killed by a falling tree on the Wilson River Fire, more generally known as the "Tillamook Burn." Reportedly Palmer was patrolling a fireline at night when a green Douglas-fir tree without obvious defect fell without warning and struck Palmer in the chest, killing him instantly. Another firefighter who was with Palmer was also injured in the tree strike, suffering what are described as "severe injuries" to his legs.
