2023 Infographic: Trouble on Four (or More) Wheels
Continuing our focus on the Wildland Fire Lessons Learned Center's (LLC) 2023 Year End Infographic, today we are looking at the 10 UTV incidents and 12 vehicle accidents reported to us last calendar year.
These incidents occurred in all phases of wildland fire management response: during travel, in initial attack, on prescribed fires, and during extended attack.
Looking first at UTV incidents, these included both driving-related incidents and UTV fires. UTV fires are a phenomenon the LLC has taken note of in the last couple of years. This year we highlight this hazard and its mitigation with a concise lesson:

From UTVs to larger vehicles: the LLC received reports of accidents involving nearly all of the vehicles we regularly drive in the wildland fire service: engines, crew carriers, pickup trucks, and water tenders.
Lessons abound from these incidents, as you will see if you dig through the links listed below. This year we chose to highlight the hazard of driving while fatigued.
